Chicago Novelist: MINE IS A LIFE-FIELD

Mine is a Life-field / LAST YEAR SUCKED AND NEXT YEAR WILL BE WORSE....but it will be the best in some ways... for some people. Maybe it's a zero sum game....until the poor inherit the earth.

The poor will inherit the earth... I believe a wise man said these words...

His sayings were hard and some of them have taken me 70 years to figure out...

Others I'm still not sure... but I believe because I choose to believe and even that was a gift... maybe because I'm poor.

I didn't take the vow of poverty, it took me.  (c) 2014 Leon Davis.

THAT'S THE YEAR  Spaniards named the Corpus Christi Bay. The area was populated by flesh eating Karankawa people who had 100 words's in their vocabulary

They learned the hard way the dangers of of eating people, especially from other continents.

Their sin? Ignorance?

A better greeting system might have helped, Welcome Wagon?

Some people value education and some are intellectually backwards.

Seems today the DNA of some people still haunt us vegan types.

Don't laugh, if you do you may have poor eating habit too.

If you can't do, teach.  Can't teach write. Write.

Most everyone is a writer, but everyone does not spend the time I do. It may not be obvious but I'm getting better. Going on three years of concentrated self-study.

Leon, the introductory paragraphs to this piece are very powerful. Some of the writing is to lyrical that I wondered at first if it was a poem or prose. (Of course, the formatting makes it look like a poem, so that threw me off a bit.)

This is a good line:
The wind had an intervocalic ebb and flow, never sleeping only hesitating, like an invisible ocean splashing, sometimes pounding in the tree tops.

I also loved these lines:
...narrow streams of sunlight flared between the
cypress and pine, skipping like fiery stones, through the mash of the back water swamp along the Lumber River, as it had from the beginning. The dim light of the afternoon powdered those who worked among the tall trees gathering sticks and placing them within a wide circle of rocks.

I'm not sure what kind of help you're looking for, but the imagery in description the place is wonderful!

In days gone by, lost colonists, runaway slaves, deserting soldiers

and pirates, traders, unwed mothers and wives, sojourned here.

African, Spanish, European, American Indians, Christians,

Jews and more, left their biological and cultural markers. Outlaws,

bounty hunters, Yankee and Rebel armies tested their resolve here.

In June 2012 narrow streams of sunlight flared between the

cypress and pine, skipping like fiery stones, through the marsh of the

back water along the Lumber River, as it had from the beginning. The

dim light of the afternoon powdered those who worked

among the tall trees gathering sticks and placing them within a wide

circle of rocks. There the sticks were stacked log cabin style with twigs

and dried pine cones put in the center. The assembly at campground

fourteen had come here deliberately to conjure forgotten tales and

share new ones, taking a peek into a seldom seen culture, hoping this

spirit of sharing and storytelling would change their lives and the

world for the better.

Late into the night, they would honor their appointment with the

natural sounds and wild life, all part of this night in the swamp, around

the campfire, dreaming of how it used to be, and what it all meant, as

the wind wisped through the tall trees.

The wind had an intervocalic ebb and flow, never sleeping only

hesitating, like an invisible ocean splashing, sometimes pounding in

the tree tops.

When the last glimmer of sunlight vanished and the soundtrack of

the swamp became unexpectedly front-row and present,

indistinguishable figures seated on logs around the fire circle faded

from view and into the dark.

Into the darkness Crying Wolf spoke to those gathered and to the

silence. He spoke with authority, into the black pitch night.

“Prepare yourselves to see what is not present and hear that

which makes no sound. You will remain silent until I speak again, then

I will ask my new friend from Chicago, Sammy Flue to light the fire if

it becomes necessary. No one spoke after that.

Adam squeezed Angelina’s hand and like it was yesterday he

heard her inner-child voice saying, “This is not North Carolina, Adam.”

“Yes it is.” Adam’s voice flashed like a Saturday night special, in his

mind.

There began a low whimper in the dark. Others joined in. Then

the whimpering became opposed by an infectious laugh until it

seemed the six people seated in the circle were all laughing.

“I’m not laughing, am I? “ Adam asked himself. Far off, voices

began to laugh. More and louder until it sounded like hundreds. The

laughter ebbed and flowed like the wind until in floated away, and with

it, all sound was gone. Not a cricket or a frog could be heard, only the

blood rushing through his head. Undiagnosed Tinnitus, he knew what

it was.

“Am I hearing sounds that are not there, as Crying Wolf had

promised?”

He began to think of Sammy Flue. Adam prayed a short prayer,

“Lord, help Sammy.” He wondered what Sammy was hearing and

thinking.

"Sammy do you have a flashlight?” Crying Wolf asked

“Yes sir,” said Sammy.

“Shine it on your face."

Sammy complied and all eyes locked on him, his face pale and

he appeared wrinkled and tired. The campers sat, not talking, listening

as the wind wisped again then died.

Two-hundred feet away a Lumbee Indian called River Lilly, sat

hidden, breathing rhythmically, preparing to beat an Indian Drum and

let out a war cry. Her companion prepared to shoot a flaming arrow

into the fire circle.

“It is important for everyone to close your eyes and remain

seated,” said Crying Wolf.

Out of the dark, from above an arrow flew, flaming.

The drum sounded three beats, River Lilly screamed. The fire ring

exploded in flames.

Two others had joined the circle and were dressed in native costume.

POOR WRITER'S WOKSHOP

I HAVE LET IT BE KNOWN that I don't have the money to fly out to the northwest and attend writer seminars....... Thus I defend your right, and mine, to help each other improve. There is
another way. Many of the highest achievers in history had little or no formal education.

Some had higher intelligence and some knew that determination, curiosity and other stuff, like
persistence, imagination and enthusiasm could magnify the potential of a smaller IQ.

Finishingology... A wide open field.

Rick Newman’s latest book is Rebounders: How Winners Pivot From Setback To Success. Follow him on Twitter: @rickjnewman

Have not read this book. I really like the title. In FACT   I love the title. It's the missing link. It's the Law. You are the enforcer. Don't stop keep walking. Keep writing. Stay sober. There are distractions. You know what they are. Many of them are out of your control. Many are in your head, behind your back. I mean not obvious. Elusive answers that are covered with the obvious. The cheap knock off of success.

THINKING OF WAYS TO FINISH..........

Finishing! How?

 Read and study short stories.

I have started billions of projects in my life. Most were easy to start.

Only a few were easy to finish.

(I can hear your synapses spanking your frontal lobes, what's this guy ever done, another
jack of all and master of, of  none)

ONE NAME is on tip of  the crib sheet of my tongue FRESH WRITING?

I started a writer's critique group about a month ago.

New writers and some seasoned one's are trying to decide how to write Fiction.

They buy books and go to writer's groups.

It's easy to go to a group in my town. People smarter than me started a good one.

It was so successful that it needed to break down into smaller groups that met on

alternate weeks to the big group.

When  "My Little Writers Group" had met several times, vacations started and I invited

new people who came and we always had four to six writers and readers.

This was my target number. Meetings were not always smooth and folks wanted to

talk about , well other things. Things besides writing. They wanted rules. I told them

there were no rules. I lied like my great uncle in law twice removed ( once or twice)

taught me. There are always rules. My book Writer's Group's will be out ... in the Alley?

I ALMOST FORGOT the name KM Wieland. Her secret / Read her short stories and visit her sight.

That was August  2013. Now  it is Jan 2014. I hope you accomplished more than I did. But I learned a lot. Making money in the market is not so hard...when it's going  up and most people don't know it.

And for me writing is always a big challenge.

August 30, 2013

Some one told me life is a prayer......but

That was a metaphor... I could say it is a myth and that would be a trope...

Truth is we don't know what life is. We know about life... that's science the

study of....Life

Man can study things...but he doesn't know it all... that's why we call some

people  know it all. Because they pretend but they don't know. People who face facts

admit they don't know it all. Think about it........

A Topic sentance in a paragraph, the main idea in a scene

............Comments or opinions may or may not be true or accurate. Just like anything you read see or hear. But if you engage your frontal lobs you may get what you look for, if you look with all your heart .............

I'M JUST trying to think of a way to say it to myself... that will help me remember...THE TOPIC SENTENCE, and/or the FOCAL CHARACTER provide many good benefits to the FICTION writer but most writers I meet resists fundamental rules. Well we can call them suggestions or exercises. If seems to me it is like preparing the wood before you paint. Or pre-heating the oven before inserting the souflette.
